There are 2 City Council initiatives aimed at improving the general appearance of the area. Firstly, it is hoped that “to let” signs in their current form will be banned and replaced by posters in windows. A similar scheme works in Nottingham and it is hoped that the appearance of streets currently blighted by a forest of “to let” signs will be improved. There are also plans to set up area charters which will outline basic expectations of residents with a view to making life in an area better for everyone living there.. This may have limited impact in areas such as Six Steets but will have an effect where there are problems with bins left on streets, etc. The City Council is looking into the possibility of introducing further measures to combat the problem of contaminated bins which are a problem in some streets locally.

There are still issues with car crime in the area though some arrests have been made. The police reported that one of the main causes of theft from crime is that cars are not being properly secured.

There are plans to set up a liaison group between local residents and the university which could act as a forum for discussion of topics affecting either party.
